On World Sight Day, local opticians highlight the 5 reasons why you should book in for a regular eye test.

Local Coventry opticians, Eyesite Eyecare Centres, are celebrating World Sight Day on Thursday 10th October by sharing their top 5 reasons that everyone should book regular eye tests.

This year, World Sight Day is highlighting the critical importance of prioritising child eye health – inspiring young people everywhere to love their eyes.

With many people leaving eye tests at the bottom of the to-do list until a problem occurs, Eyesite Eyecare are keen to share 5 reasons why this isn’t the best idea.

  • Identify conditions early – Going for an eye test can detect a variety of conditions that could impact your eyesight. Glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and eye infections are all easily picked up on routine tests. Spotting it before the problem develops gives you the best chance of treating a condition before it affects your eyesight.
  • Pick up on changes – Regular eye tests, even if you’ve always had 20/20 vision, means that any potential deterioration is more likely to be noticed at an early stage. Corrective action can then be taken sooner – before you are even aware that you need it.
  • Update prescriptions – Checking your glasses or contact lenses are still suitable is a good idea, since eyesight can change and fluctuate throughout your life. Regular check-ups help to keep on top of any changes, allowing the prescription to be adjusted to your unique specifications.
  • Early warning signs – Occasionally, eye tests can unfortunately spot something more sinister than deteriorating eyesight. Although rare, a visit to the optician can be your first indication that something isn’t quite right. The good news is, having regular eye appointments means that problems can be picked up early and referred on for specialist treatment.
  • Inspiring eye health – An indirect benefit of sticking to regular eye appointments is that it encourages others to do the same – especially if you have children. Learning to look after your eyes from a young age encourages a generation of children with the information they need to protect their eyes and look after their vision.

Eyesite Eyecare Centres is passionate about ensuring that everyone has the knowledge and power to take care of their vision. Speaking about the importance of getting checked out if something doesn’t feel quite right, optician Zainib Malik says, ‘Signs for the patients to look out for is honestly just anything happening to their vision or sight out of the ordinary. It’s better to get it checked out and it be nothing and to wait for it to settle and it actually get worse and be something serious.’

David from Coventry recently lost his eyesight in one eye. He was seen immediately by the team at Eyesite Eyecare Centres and referred to the hospital for an urgent appointment. Within two days, David underwent surgery for a torn retina. David says, ‘That is an incredible service from both Eyesite Eyecare Centres and the wonderful team at Walsgrave Hospital’.

If you’re inspired to book an eye test, or if you have any concerns about your eye health, book an appointment with Eyesite Eyecare this World Sight Day and enjoy clearer vision for the whole family.
