EYECARE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
At Eyesite Eyecare Centres in Coventry, we know that a child’s vision is precious. Healthy eyesight is essential for learning, confidence, and development — which is why our children’s eye examinations go beyond a standard sight test. Our optometrists use advanced equipment and child-friendly techniques to assess vision at every age, even in babies and toddlers.
At Eyesite Eyecare in Coventry, we understand how important early eye care is for children’s development. Our children’s eye care services include comprehensive vision screening, routine eye tests, and expert advice on glasses or contact lenses for youngsters. We aim to make visits comfortable and stress‑free for children and parents alike — book your child’s eye examination today for professional, caring eye care.
We recommend regular check-ups to identify any potential problems early. Research shows that up to 1 million children in the UK have an undetected vision problem. Since most learning is visual, children with undiagnosed eye conditions are more likely to struggle with reading, writing, and overall school performance.
Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem
Parents should look out for common symptoms, including:
-
Squinting or turning their head to see clearly
-
Sitting very close to the TV or holding books too near
-
Skipping words or lines when reading
-
Difficulty concentrating on reading, writing, or drawing
-
Unexplained frustration or poor performance at school
-
Complaints of headaches or eye strain
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to book a children’s eye test in Coventry as soon as possible. The earlier a problem is detected, the sooner it can be managed — helping your child get back to enjoying clear, comfortable vision.
Myopia (Short-Sightedness) and Myopia Control in Children
Childhood myopia (short-sightedness) is becoming increasingly common, especially with rising screen use and reduced outdoor time. Left unmanaged, myopia often worsens as children grow, leading to stronger prescriptions and an increased risk of future eye disease.
At Eyesite, we offer the latest myopia control treatments designed to slow down the progression of short-sightedness in children and teenagers, including:
-
Specialist myopia control contact lenses (daily disposable and monthly options) and glasses
-
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) – overnight lenses that reshape the cornea during sleep, providing clear vision during the day without glasses or lenses
-
Lifestyle advice to support healthier visual habits
These treatments don’t just correct vision — they help protect your child’s long-term eye health.
Colorimetry and Meares-Irlen Syndrome
At Eyesite Eyecare Centres in Coventry, we also provide specialist assessments for visual stress and Meares-Irlen Syndrome — a condition that can affect reading ability and concentration, often linked to dyslexia or learning difficulties.
Children and adults with visual stress may experience:
-
Words moving, blurring, or “dancing” on the page
-
Headaches or eye strain when reading
-
Difficulty concentrating on written text
-
Skipping lines or losing their place
Using advanced Colorimetry testing, our optometrists can identify whether coloured overlays or precision-tinted lenses may reduce these symptoms. For many patients, these solutions make reading clearer, more comfortable, and less stressful, helping them perform better at school or work.

Myopia is a global problem. *By 2050, it is predicted that half the world’s population will have myopia, with nearly one billion at high risk of sight threatening ocular pathology In the UK, the prevalence of myopia in children aged between 10–16 years has more than doubled over the last 50 years, and children are becoming myopic at a younger age. good vision is essential in childhood development. Research has shown that up to 1 million children in the UK have an undetected vision problem (Eyecare Trust Statistics based on DCSF 2013 School Census 0-12 year olds). As the majority of a child’s learning occurs visually, children with undiagnosed eye conditions are more likely to experience difficulty with learning at school (Eye-Inspire, 2016).

Visual Stress
Eyesite Eyecare Centres provide diagnosis and treatment of visual stress for dyslexia and specific learning difficulties, migraine and epilepsy.
‘Visual stress can be a major part of the problem in people with reading difficulties, including Dyslexia. This can cause eyestrain, headaches and result in academic under-achievement. Once visual stress has been identified and treated, remaining difficulties become easier to deal with.’
- Eyesite Eyecare Centres Optometrist and Fellow of the International Institute of Colorimetry, Ian Beasley.
Administering a coloured overlay or filter has been found to ease the difficulty of reading for those with visual stress. Eyesite Eyecare Centres have a range of assessments, designed to accurately identify the type of coloured filter that is required on an individual basis. We are also an approved test centre for those who are interested in ReadEZ products.

Colorimetry
Scientific research has proven that visual stress can be reduced by prescribing precise coloured filters when reading or using a computer.
Eyesite Eyecare Centres have a range of assessments, designed to accurately identify the type of coloured filter that is required on an individual basis. This includes the use of an Intuitive Colorimeter, allowing for the optimum coloured lens to be identified and then made up into spectacles.
Commenting on the service, Optometrist and Fellow of the International Institute of Colorimetry, Ian Beasley from Eyesite Eyecare Centres says: ‘Visual stress can be a major part of the problem in people with reading difficulties, including Dyslexia. This can cause eyestrain, headaches and result in academic under-achievement. Once visual stress has been identified and treated, remaining difficulties become easier to deal with.’

Contact Lenses
There’s no ‘official’ age to start wearing contact lenses – it really depends on your child’s ability to use and look after their lenses. Children are quick learners and have proven to be just as capable at wearing lenses as adults – but we’d recommend that a parent or guardian should supervise them to start with.
The benefits of contact lenses for kids
- Kids can sometimes feel self-conscious wearing glasses – contact lenses correct their vision while maintaining their natural appearance.
- Their full field of vision is in focus which is great for sports.
- They provide the freedom for kids to run around and get stuck in when they’re playing or during sports.
- Removes the worry about breaking or damaging their glasses (so parents will enjoy the benefits too).
